AUCTION : 0515

Lot#: 790

DESCRIPTION: Lot of 5 (Five) items, four British tea caddies and one spice caddy, all with locks, 3 with keys, c1850
CONDITION: Wikipedia or any web-site on tea will explain the value of tea in the 1800s. Remember the Boston Tea Party took place when tea was a valuable commodity. These come from a serious collector in Arizona. The word "caddy" is derived from the Malayan word "kati". The two larger boxes each have two compartments, one for black tea and one for green tea {lids intact, one foot replaced}, the two smaller boxes are single compartment, and the intermediate box has 6 cavities for spice jars. The one large box is rosewood veneer with MOP inlay and the octagonal lid box is fruitwood with multi colored wood veneer inlay. At the height of interest, these would have garnered around $400 each. Our estimate is for all 5. Ht 5"
